Deviation was written through Lazette Gifford's Two Year Novel Course in 2008. Because it was my first attempt at science fiction I was supremely nervous about getting things right. I took the novel through so many drafts that it started to get ridiculous. Because I already have several fantasy novels under my name I actually envisioned this novel as a fantasy with swords and castles and all that, but a good friend challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone, so to speak.
I'm very glad he did.
While I may have had my moments where I got tired of revising it, I love this story. Maybe the science is a little off, in which case I will lean heavily on the fact that it is speculative fiction, but at the heart of the story is a search for redemption.
Amid the grief and turmoil that many of the characters are going through, it is my hope that the story of redemption I have written can find its way into the hearts and minds of readers everywhere.
Tapped is the beginning of a much larger series, which is fun for me to say since most of my sequels and such have been accidents. This time I knew going in that there was going to be more, much more, and that I wanted to explore some deeper questions with my fiction.
All of the books in this series are going to ask one theological question because yes, I enjoy asking questions along the lines of; where does religion come from? How did we get here? What part does Faith play in our day to day lives?
But those questions are heartless without a context, so I wanted to make them more personal, to make them matter ... and thus was born the Barlow family, with Jorry, Seach, and Devon each tackling these issues in their own way.
And, of course, adventuring through space, dodging authorities and pirates alike, and generally causing mayhem wherever they go.
I also wanted to do a science fiction that focused on our immediate galaxy. There will come a time when I have to move beyond the known and out into extreme space but for right now I'm enjoying learning about each planet (and moon) that I come to.
